TLC's Extreme Couponing: Coupon Hoarders

TLC extreme couponingDo you cut and use coupons each week at the grocery store? Statistics say that America throws away $57 billion dollars worth of coupons each year. Are you part of this statistic or are you a coupon hoarder?

Meet Nathan Angle of TLC’s new reality show “Extreme Couponing”. Nathan is an extreme coupon collector with a garage stockpile of nearly 10,000 items. His stockpile includes approximatively three years worth of toilet paper, 40 lbs of chicken, 50 lbs of cheese and 1500 sticks of deodorant. Nathan’s stockpile is approximatively worth $50,000 – $75,000 all of which he only paid under $1000. Nathan plans his shopping trips about 12-18 months in advance by researching paper and online coupons. Nathan says his biggest shopping trip to date included 1100 boxes of cereal and 300 toothbrushes all of which cost $5743 but only paid $241.

While we think cutting coupons is a great way to save, we’re wondering how Nathan organizes his hundreds and thousands of coupons during his planning year. One of our favorite ways to organize coupons is by expiration date using a 13-tab file accordion. Simply label each tab inside the accordion with each calendar month of the year (e.g., Jan, Feb, Mar, etc). Do not label the year (e.g., 2010). File coupons according to expiration month. Use the 13th tab to file coupons that never expire. Once the first day of the new month arrives, toss last month’s unused coupons. Monthly purges makes maintaining your coupon organizer simple and easy.

I watched the show extreme couponing this evening!! As a fellow couponer I was very impressed!!! However I do have a question. On Nathan Angles segment he was using numerous coupons for the same item, like 1,000 coupons for cereal, 300 for toothbrushes. How and where is he finding this many coupons for the same item? Also our local grocery chain has recently informed me that they can limit the number of each item I can purchase with coupons. They say the limit is 5 of each item is that true can they do that????

I am like most single mothers and live on a very tight budget. I am also going to school. I would like to know how I can learn to do the shopping that Nathan does. I have a sister who is also a single mother and we are trying to better ourselves and being able to grocery shop without crying would be fabulous!!! Please help us!!!
