[VIDEO] How to Organize and Add Storage to Bi-Fold Closet Doors

Bi-fold doors have been a challenge of mine for years. I was always wondering how to add storage to the inside of bi-fold doors with an organized and elegant solution. I searched and searched online. I asked friends, family, and colleagues. It seemed that there were no solutions available. Luckily I never gave up and continued to search for the perfect storage solution. Check out the video below which shows my organized solution to adding storage to bi-fold doors:

The products I used to add storage to the inside of the bi-fold doors are the Over-the-Door Shoe Pockets (clear). They have four columns of pockets (enough pockets for two pairs of shoes per row). However, in order to fit them in my bi-fold doors, I had to cut off one column of pockets. Having only three columns does not bother me since I’m not using them for shoes.

So what do you think? Is this something that you would do in your home? Do you have a better solution? If so, I’d love to hear about it, or see it. Post your comments below.

The Container Store Gift Registry / Wedding Registry

So, I just spent an hour shopping at The Container Store (I could spend all day there!). It really is one of my favorite stores since I’m obsessed with organizing. I have probably tried and tested 95% of their products and I’m definitely a fan. In fact, I know each and every employee at the store nearest me which is Arlington, VA. Crazy, right? Well, when you live less than one mile from the store and you eat, live, and breathe organization, it’s tough not to always be in there checking out their products and exchanging organizing ideas with the employees.

Ed & I - The happily engaged organized couple!

Anyway, while I was shopping today, I came across a sign for their new Gift/Wedding Registry “Vow To Be Organized”. How cool! This new program/option couldn’t have come at a better time since I am engaged to Ed! As I begin to plan my wedding, I will obviously be registering at The Container Store, there are zero doubts about that. The real question is, what DON’T I already have?!

It makes sense that The Container Store would offer a wedding registry. One of the best times to get organized is when you get married and are forced to combine 20-30 years worth of stuff with someone else’s stuff (assuming you get married in your 20s-30s). Plus, if you start your marriage in an organized manner, it’s going to save you stress, time, and fights down the road. Not only that, but disorganization costs you money as well (the late fees, buying duplicates and replacements, etc).

As a Certified Professional Organizer who has worked with hundreds of people, I’ve seen it happen time after time. The newlyweds move into their new home, both excited and ready to begin their new lives together, only to find that they have a lot of ‘stuff’. The husband brings all of his stuff from his ‘bachelor pad’ and the wife has all of her ‘nice’ Crate & Barrel stuff, now what? You are left with duplicates of EVERYTHING. When I say everything, I mean everything – dishware, flatware, linens, tools, vacuum cleaner, rugs, decorations, furniture etc. What to do now?

I am kind of guilty of this too…Ed and I moved in together three years ago while we were still dating and I remember combining our kitchenware, trying to pick whose furniture we would keep (I won that battle!) and trying to convince him my decorations were ‘classier’ than his. It was definitely a challenge and took us a few months to get everything situated and organized. The funny part is, we are both very organized people and it STILL took a long time to shift through.

The truth is, you NEED to get organized when you get married or move in with someone. Even though it takes time to combine items, make decisions, and find the perfect home for everything you own, it’s essential to your relationship.

That’s all for now.

Here’s to YOU starting your marriage happily and organized!

I've Exercised 9 Times In The Past 3 Months

I just wanted to share a quick story before we all start our weekends. Is that okay? Well, as some of you might know exercising isn’t my favorite activity. Although I will say this – once I’m in a routine, I actually look forward to exercising. I really do. The only thing is – when I slip and fall off my routine, It’s difficult for me to pick back up. It really is. I hope you don’t mind me being really honest with you.

Here's my exercise tracker - 9 times in 3 months! I wasn't joking...

Here's my exercise tracker - 9 times in 3 months! I wasn't joking...

Anyway, in the past three months I haven’t been very consistent with my workout routine. In fact, I’ve exercised nine times. YES, only nine times! How do I know this? Well, as an extremely organized person, I, of course track this. Did you know that anything you track GROWS? It really does. In fact, Ed, my fiancee, tracks his routine as well. Sometimes we get a little bit competitive but in a joking way :) Ed even commented last week on my lack of stickers on my workout chart! Ok, it really is time to get back into this routine…

So why haven’t I gone to the gym very much in the past three months? To be completely honest, I really haven’t made it my priority and I haven’t been committed. My business has been extremely busy and I’ve been working on some very exciting projects that will be kicked off in the fall. I know, I know, it’s not an excuse to stop working out and My friend Serena who is a personal trainer is going to yell at me when she sees this blog post! Can I at least get credit for the nine times I DID GO?!

So here’s the good news – yesterday I made a commitment to myself to get back in the routine of exercising. In fact, in the beginning of the year I set of goal of working out 100 times in 2011. As of this morning, I’ve worked out 53 times leaving me 47 more workouts before December 31st. I will work out 47 more times this year because once I’m committed, I do whatever it takes.

Yesterday was the first day of me getting back into my routine and yes, I didn’t look forward to the workout. Guess what though? Ten minutes into the workout I didn’t want to stop. I felt amazing. This morning when I woke up to exercise, I actually wanted to workout. I was excited and felt motivated.

It’s really amazing to see what happens when you just lean into something. The truth is the same for organizing. Sometimes we have all of this anxiety about starting to organize but once you take that first step, you realize it really isn’t that bad. Sometimes we just need a little push.

So here’s my two cents for you, whatever you are ‘dreading’ or whatever is giving you ‘anxiety’, the only way to overcome it, is to lean into it. I promise it will become easier once you take that first step. Whether you are exercising or organizing, everything will get easier once you begin. You just have to START. How do I know? My clients are walking testimonials.

Feeling great and ready to start my weekend,

What It's Like To Be A Young Entrepreneur

Alejandra Costello

As an entrepreneur living in a city, I meet a LOT of people. The one common denominator between all of the people I meet is the question of ‘What is it like to be an entrepreneur?’I really love talking about being an entrepreneur because I’m so passionate about my work. Afterall, I started my organizing practice because I eat, breathe, and love organizing. I know, I know, you either think I am crazy to love organizing or you understand the excitement of seeing perfectly stacked (and of course labeled) bins in a closet! Either way, I’m writing this blog post to answer everyone’s question on what it’s like to be a young entrepreneur.

How did you get started as an entrepreneur and how old were you? I had my defining moment on March 16, 2008 at age 23. I was sitting in my cubicle at work surfing the internet, tired and bored out of my mind (5PM couldn’t come quicker) and somehow, somewhere I came across the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) and it changed my life in a really BIG way. I remember thinking to myself, “I can get paid to help people organize?!” UM, yes, sign me up!! If you know me, you know I am obsessed with organizing and always have been. Growing up as a kid, my bedroom was always organized and color-coded, I absolutely LOVED back-to-school shopping and organizing, and I always used to get excited to put away the groceries after going to Giant or Safeway. Clearly, I was born an organizer.

Was it easy to start a business being so young? Um, no. Starting my business was not easy. If fact, it has been a very long road since Day 1. I’ve made a million and one mistakes, I’ve been scared and, at times, felt very lost. In the beginning I felt as if starting a business wasn’t the right thing to do (nobody in my family had ever started a business before) and I should just work in the corporate world for the next 40-50 years. However, I quickly learned that it was okay to break the mold and do something different. Everything I have done since 2008 has been self-taught. One of my favorite analogies is by Jack Canfield, it goes something like this: Imagine a huge oak tree and your job is to chop it down with an ax. Seems impossible, right? Well actually it’s not. Think about this: Obviously the tree isn’t going to come down the first time you swing the ax, however, the more you swing into it, the closer you are to chopping down the tree. Eventually the tree has to come down and it always does. It’s the same concept with starting a business, just gotta lean into it and it all falls into place eventually.Sounds pretty accurate to me. So long story short, it’s been hard, really hard, but totally worth it!

How has becoming an entrepreneur changed your life? My life has changed in the most amazing ways and it’s because I’ve taken action to seek out opportunities that will lead me to fulfill my wildest dreams. I read this amazing quote yesterday “We are all faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations” and I cannot agree more. It seems as though any challenge that is set in front of you is really just an opportunity to bring you closer to your end goal. How you handle the opportunity is fair game.

So what exactly is it like to be a young entrepreneur? Honestly, life is crazy. Crazy in a good way though. I am almost always working from the time I wake up to the time I go to sleep, five or six days a week. Is it a bad thing? No, I genuinely love what I do so it doesn’t feel like work, it feels more like a fun school/art project with no due date.

What is your schedule like as a young entrepreneur?

  • Monday – I usually wake up at 7AM. I try to reserve Mondays for ‘Marketing Mondays’ which means, working in my home office on administrative tasks/projects like marketing, bookkeeping, lead generation, social media, new ideas, etc. Basically, I spend my Mondays running the show from the time I wake-up until around the time I go to bed. It sounds like so much work, and it is, but I take small breaks throughout the day to make lunch/dinner, do laundry, run errands, etc. I don’t do client work on Mondays, I strictly work on growing my organizing practice.
  • Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday – Tuesdays through Thursdays I wake up at 5 or 6AM and begin helping clients at 8 or 9AM. I use my calendar to guide me through my day. I go from one coaching call to the next educating, motivating, and supporting clients through the organizing process. No matter how long the days are, the feeling of satisfaction from helping so many people from all over the world organize their spaces always keeps me motivated. Tuesdays through Thursdays I also fit in In-Home Blueprints for my DC clients, which requires me to travel around Virginia/Maryland. Typically my client calls and appointments come to an end around 5 to 7PM. After that I wrap up loose ends from the day and begin preparing for tomorrow.
  • Friday – Fridays are reserved for creating videos (this is actually something new). I recently started doing YouTube videos on organizing (subscribe if you want notification each time I upload a new video with organizing tips) and it’s been a blast. So now, I am reserving Fridays for creating organizing videos with helpful tips people can easily implement themselves from the comfort of my super organized home. I also reserve Fridays for going out to breakfast or lunch with clients or strategic alliances. On occasion I’ll take off Friday, make a piña colada (with a cherry and an umbrella), and start the weekend a little bit early :)
  • Saturday / Sunday – So what do I do with my weekends? I usually don’t work on weekends except Sunday evening when I prepare for the week ahead. On occasion, I will work weekends during my busy seasons. However, I love to spend the weekend doing fun activities with my wonderful fiancee Ed, or with family and friends trying new restaurants, picking fruit in the fall or summer, going on a weekend getaway, or lounging around and relaxing. Afterall, what’s the point of life if you can’t enjoy yourself?

What’s the best part about being a young entrepreneur? The sky really is the limit. I love knowing there is no cap on what I can do in this world and that anything is possible. I also love the excitement of setting and accomplishing goals. Nothing is more rewarding than checking off your goals once you meet them. When you accomplish a goal, it’s reassurance that you’re on the right path in life. It’s an amazing feeling.

What’s the hardest part about being a young entrepreneur? You are literally responsible for EVERYTHING. There is no bigger ‘boss’. You are it. You have to be very goal-oriented, therefore you are accountable to yourself. If you don’t have the right motivation and are unable to keep promises to yourself, then you will not be able to achieve your goals and ultimately fulfill your dreams.

What’s the best advice you would give somebody young who doesn’t like their current job? If you dread getting up in the morning to start your day, you’re on the wrong path and need change. Find your passion in life. Find something that makes you genuinely excited to get out of bed in the morning and begin your day. It is possible! Whatever that passion is, don’t ignore it, follow it. Never, ever, ever give up no matter what happens or what someone says. Anything amazing that exists in this world began with a single thought inside of someone’s head. From that single thought, action was taken and something incredible was created.

The rest is to be continued :)

TLC's Extreme Couponing: Coupon Hoarders

TLC extreme couponingDo you cut and use coupons each week at the grocery store? Statistics say that America throws away $57 billion dollars worth of coupons each year. Are you part of this statistic or are you a coupon hoarder?

Meet Nathan Angle of TLC’s new reality show “Extreme Couponing”. Nathan is an extreme coupon collector with a garage stockpile of nearly 10,000 items. His stockpile includes approximatively three years worth of toilet paper, 40 lbs of chicken, 50 lbs of cheese and 1500 sticks of deodorant. Nathan’s stockpile is approximatively worth $50,000 – $75,000 all of which he only paid under $1000. Nathan plans his shopping trips about 12-18 months in advance by researching paper and online coupons. Nathan says his biggest shopping trip to date included 1100 boxes of cereal and 300 toothbrushes all of which cost $5743 but only paid $241.

While we think cutting coupons is a great way to save, we’re wondering how Nathan organizes his hundreds and thousands of coupons during his planning year. One of our favorite ways to organize coupons is by expiration date using a 13-tab file accordion. Simply label each tab inside the accordion with each calendar month of the year (e.g., Jan, Feb, Mar, etc). Do not label the year (e.g., 2010). File coupons according to expiration month. Use the 13th tab to file coupons that never expire. Once the first day of the new month arrives, toss last month’s unused coupons. Monthly purges makes maintaining your coupon organizer simple and easy.

NAPO 2011 Get Organized Month (GO Month)

Get Organized Month (GO Month)Each January the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) celebrates “Get Organized Month (GO month)”. During GO month, NAPO chapters around the country organize public events with free giveaways and prizes to help and inspire individuals and businesses to get organized. January is the perfect time to celebrate GO month since individuals often make New Year’s resolutions to better organize their time and lives.

While New Year’s resolutions are great, they aren’t always kept. Statistics say, about 90% of New Year’s resolutions are broken by February. Sound familiar? Instead of making a New Year’s resolution to “get organized” which is very vague and subjective, try setting a few short-term goals which will eventually lead to completing a long-term goal. For example, if your long-term goal is to organize your kitchen, try setting a short-term goal of sorting and purging your kitchen cabinets by February. After you’ve completed the first short-term goal, try sorting and purging the kitchen pantry by March. By December you will have completed a series of short-term goals which eventually leads you to completing your long-term goal of “organizing the kitchen”.

So how is Color-Coded celebrating GO month for 2011? Color-Coded is offering 10% off all organizing services for the month of January to all clients in the Washington D.C. area. Mention “GO Month” to one of our associates and we’ll give you 10% off all organizing services until January 31, 2010. Happy Organizing!
